Dr Lachlan McDowall is a Clinical Cardiologist and Cardiac Electrophysiologist practicing on the Central Coast and Sydney’s North Shore.

He completed three degrees and postdoctoral research at Sydney University over a period of 12 years, first graduating with a Bachelor of Science with first class honours (2003). He was subsequently awarded an Australian Postgraduate Award Scholarship to complete a PhD in Physiology, the Faculty of Medicine (2007) and finally postgraduate medicine, awarded a Bachelor of Medicine/Bachelor of Surgery (2011).

Dr McDowall spent his postgraduate clinical years from intern to Physician and Cardiology Advanced Training at Royal North Shore Hospital, becoming a Fellow of the Royal Australian College of Physicians (Cardiology) in 2018. He followed this with sub-specialty training as a Clinical Electrophysiology and Pacing Fellow at Princess Alexandra Hospital in Brisbane (2019) and Toronto General Hospital in Canada (2020-21). Concurrent with his medical training, he continued post-doctoral research in Physiology and continued lecturing at Sydney University concurrent with his PhD, medical degree and into his clinical years.

After returning to Australia, he has re-joined his established network on the North Shore and the Central Coast with a vision to provide sub-specialty Cardiac Electrophysiology and Pacing services both publicly and privately across these regions.

Specialty Areas

Cardiologist with sub-specialty in Cardiac Electrophysiology and Pacing:

  • Investigation and management of a range of adult cardiology issues, with sub-specialty focus on arrhythmias including assessment of issues such as palpitations and syncope.

Cardiac Electrophysiology and Ablations:

  • Diagnostic electrophysiology studies.
  • Cardiac catheter ablation including supraventricular tachycardias, atrial fibrillation/flutter and ventricular ectopic/ventricular tacychardias.
  • Experience in complex arrhythmia including post-transplant and arrhythmia in adult congenital heart disease patients.
  • Extensive experience with emerging technologies such as fluoroless ablation and intracardiac echo.

Cardiac Implantable Electronic Devices:

  • Implantation and long term management of management of pacemakers, defibrillators and loop recorders.

With a background in physiology and research, Dr McDowall is passionate about understanding the mechanisms of cardiac disease and investigating and managing accordingly.
