  • Cardiology

Dr Lachlan McDowall is a Clinical Cardiologist and Cardiac Electrophysiologist practicing on the Central Coast and Sydney’s North Shore.

He completed three degrees and postdoctoral research at Sydney University over a period of 12 years, first graduating with a Bachelor of Science with first class honours (2003). He was subsequently awarded an Australian Postgraduate Award Scholarship to complete a PhD in Physiology, the Faculty of Medicine (2007) and finally postgraduate medicine, awarded a Bachelor of Medicine/Bachelor of Surgery (2011).

Dr McDowall spent his postgraduate clinical years from intern to Physician and Cardiology Advanced Training at Royal North Shore Hospital, becoming a Fellow of the Royal Australian College of Physicians (Cardiology) in 2018. He followed this with sub-specialty training as a Clinical Electrophysiology and Pacing Fellow at Princess Alexandra Hospital in Brisbane (2019) and Toronto General Hospital in Canada (2020-21). Concurrent with his medical training, he continued post-doctoral research in Physiology and continued lecturing at Sydney University concurrent with his PhD, medical degree and into his clinical years.

After returning to Australia, he has re-joined his established network on the North Shore and the Central Coast with a vision to provide sub-specialty Cardiac Electrophysiology and Pacing services both publicly and privately across these regions.

Specialty Areas

Cardiac Electrophysiology and Ablations:

  • Diagnostic electrophysiology studies.
  • Cardiac catheter ablation including supraventricular tachycardias, atrial fibrillation/flutter and ventricular ectopic/ventricular tacychardias.
  • Experience in complex arrhythmia including post-transplant and arrhythmia in adult congenital heart disease patients.
  • Extensive experience with emerging technologies such as fluoroless ablation and intracardiac echo.

Cardiac Implantable Electronic Devices:

  • Implantation and long term management of management of pacemakers, defibrillators and loop recorders.

With a background in physiology and research, Dr McDowall is passionate about understanding the mechanisms of cardiac disease and investigating and managing accordingly.

"Cardiology and cardiac electrophysiology in particular, is one of the few medical specialties which has a large burden of mortality and morbidity, but with a large potential for improvement for patients. It involves applied anatomy, physiology and pharmacology and a balanced mix of procedure and clinical care."
