After being awarded his Fellowship by the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS) in general surgery in 1998, he completed four years of specialist colorectal training, during which time he gained extensive experience in the management of colon and rectal cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, colonoscopy, as well as pelvic floor disorders(such as rectal prolapse) and anal conditions. The first two years of this training were performed in the United Kingdom and at the St George Colorectal Surgical Unit in Sydney. This was followed by two years on the official Australia and New Zealand Training Board program for Colon and Rectal Surgery (ANZTBCRS). These years were spent in prestigious colorectal units in Sydney and Melbourne. Entry into this program is highly competitive. The program is the sole recognised training program for colorectal surgery in Australasia. Its reputation is highly regarded internationally. Completion of the program allows one entry into membership of the Colorectal Surgical Society of Australia and New Zealand (CSSANZ).

Dr Simpson is extensively involved in the teaching and education of surgical trainees, junior doctors and medical students, is a hospital examiner for medical students, FRACS I and FRACS II surgical candidates, has presented and published both nationally and internationally on Colorectal diseases, is a reviewer for the Australia and New Zealand Journal of Surgery, and is a CHASM (Collaborating Hospitals ’Audit of Surgical Mortality') first and second line assessor.
