Theatre Milestone for Gosford Private

The Gosford Private Hospital team achieved a major milestone this week, reaching 100 procedures performed using the da Vinci Xi surgical robot in the same month that the 12th operating theatre was commissioned.

The Gosford Private Hospital team achieved a major milestone this week, reaching 100 procedures performed using the da Vinci Xi surgical robot in the same month that the 12th operating theatre was commissioned.

The completion of the 12th operating theatre is the final step of the $32m re-development project at Gosford Private Hospital, which has seen the installation of a new Day Surgery unit and step down lounge, , an 18 bed recovery bay, a 12 bed maternity ward and a 23 bed dedicated surgical ward.

The finalisation of the theatre coupled by the 100 case milestone further cements Gosford Private Hospital’s position as the premier private hospital on the Central Coast according to Head of Regional Operations North, Matt Kelly.

“The unlocking of this 12th theatre is a critical part of the puzzle in supporting our hospital to continue to meet the growing needs of the Central Coast community.

“It is incredibly important that even during challenging times, we continue to innovate, push barriers and embrace technological advancements where possible.

“I am particularly proud that during the challenging times during 2021 that we focused on innovation by installing the $3.5m da Vinci Xi surgical robot, further growing our scope of services and the opportunities we provide to the region.

“Our new theatres and the specially designed surgical ward meets the growing demand from our specialists and patients for access to premier facilities, where innovation and surgical advancements can be achieved.”

Since its installation in than August 2021, more than six specialists have become accredited to use the $3.5m da Vinci Xi surgical robot in the areas of Urology, General Surgery, Colorectal, Cardiothoracic, and Gynaecology.

The achievement of 100 cases has exceeded expectations according to Gosford Private Hospital Perioperative Services Manager Deana Harrison.

“We have supported patients through minimally invasive, innovative robotic led techniques for procedures such as Hysterectomies, Bowel Resections, Rectoplexy, Nephectomy and Cystectomies and the results speak for themselves,” Ms Harrison said.

“Overall we have far exceeded our projections for cases with the robot and moving forward we expect this to continue to be the case as the community opts for procedures using the robot so they can experience the benefits associated with minimally invasive procedures.”

The da Vinci Xi surgical system assists surgeons to perform minimally invasive surgery with an advanced set of instruments and a 3D high-definition view of the surgical field.

The specialist surgeon is in control of the robot at all times and through smaller instrument sizes, the da Vinci Xi, enables surgeons to operate through a few small incisions and the system comprises of a surgeon console, patient cart and vision cart.

While the $32m development is now complete, the Gosford Private Hospital team is continuing to grow to meet demand and adapt to ongoing challenges related to COVID-19 according to Gosford Private Hospital CEO Michael Mitchell.

“The health sector is the largest employer on the Central Coast and our Hospital employs more than 600 staff and I’m pleased to share currently there are a range of health care job opportunities at our hospital,” he said.

“We are looking forward to contributing to the growth of talent in the region and to the services the community can access, by hiring from the community for the community.
